BipolarLawyerCook has published a fantastic piece about doing God's work with a leftover turkey carcass. Must read. As I said in my comment, I'd way rather read food porn like this than spend yet another half-hour gazing at Giada's creamy cleavage. BLC rocks! She needs her own show! Flannel robe-and-husband-in-plaid-jammies included! (She also smartly mentions scurvy at the end, which can be prevented by sauerkraut, by the way.)
I remain joyful that Crescent Dragonwagon, author of Passionate Vegetarian and The Cornbread Gospels and many other books, has found her way to blogging. In a recent toast about making French post... erm... post about toast, she mentions an upcoming book based on her Fearless Writing workshops (and an upcoming workshop in Little Rock for folks who live near or could travel).
It's bittersweet for me to read about the book because my great plan/resolution for 2008 was to kick my calcified promotion skills back into motion to bring her to Portland for a Fearless Writing workshop. Illness in my family and ongoing demands from the resident 3-year-old prevented me from being able to do this. Thankfully, I was smart enough to realize I couldn't pull it off this year before I began involving CD in the plans to much of a degree. (In my previous life, I organized events and workshops for writers so I knew what was involved, but I couldn't pull it off because of the kid and the dying family members. And... man... the ongoing feeling of being a household appliance hasn't done much for my self-esteem. I guess it will take longer for me to pull this off.)
Anyway... I really love how Crescent Dragonwagon mines her life for details and meaning. I love her generosity in sharing. Reading her is a gift.
Weird to be so profoundly reminded of my unmet New Year's Hopes on the eve of yet another new year.
Being a mom, wife, daughter, sister, and cousin has certainly been challenging this year. Let's hope I can rise above this next year so that I can do things that please me, too.
